Why am I getting a FORBIDDEN 403 error?

I know very basic information about web design.

I used a template from W3schools to make my website ( and uploaded all of my files to the web root in the public html folder of my cPanel. When I try to open my site I get this message:

You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I have no idea why this is happening, is it because I used the code from W3schools? I downloaded their CSS ( and also added a link to w3CSS in my code as they instructed.

I am pretty confused/frustrated and would really appreciate if someone could help me understand what's going on, because I just spent countless hours trying to code this website!!

HI @danyasmith

Thank you for your post. 403 forbidden errors means that when the domain is resolving to the hosting, it is unable to find an index file.

This may be due to many reasons, some of the most common are:

1. The files are uploaded to a directory the domain is not pointed towards in the cPanel setup

2. The index file has not been named appropriately (index.html , home.html, index.php. etc.)

3. The DNS is not resolving to the proper host

The best way to resolve this is to contact our support so that they may review the settings and configuration to ensure the initial hosting setup was configured properly.

Best Wishes!

My file was named Index.php. Once I changed it to lowercase index.php, it worked fine.
